How We Slashed 50% of Development Time via Workato

Gamuda has been investing heavily to propel ourselves into becoming a modern and digitalized organization within the construction industry, often touted as a rather slow industry to adopt technological transformations.

However, this presents us with a particular challenge: how do we ensure reliable connectivity between our various software and datasets used in different departments by different people?

There are currently two ways to do this. Traditionally we would have to hard code the solution to facilitate the connectivity. However, as technology evolves and becomes available, we have opted to use an integration platform that is more reliable and time-saving.

The Workato User Interface

Why Use an Integration Platform?

We rely extensively on our data coming from cost management, safety enforcement, and many digital dashboards, and other sources. The amount of data we collect, manipulate, and monitor is massive. We are currently utilizing Workato which is an intelligent automation platform that enables us to integrate many of our software and databases.

Reacting Faster: Technology grows and transforms rapidly. With Workato, these changes are well packaged and easy to understand. That gives us the advantage of being able to adapt much quicker to changes in the way our software communicates compared to when we hard code these solutions.

Eliminating Skills Barrier: As we grow in terms of people and technology, we acknowledge that not everyone will have a programming background. Workato is a low-code solution and with its relatively straightforward interface and being a well-managed platform in general, we are already solving implementation barriers for future projects.

“We can definitely implement the solutions to all our integration problems via code, but we have to invest time in maintaining these codes which at scale can be too much. The learning curve is way faster with Workato as well, I save about 50% of my time from learning to implementation”

  • 20 active data pipelines, 50 under development
  • 40-50% reduction of time to implement compared to traditional coding

Automated Notifications: We developed a script to send automated notifications for approvals needed in our processes. This means that the right personnel are notified when forms are handed over for approval, and the process can continue without any human intermediaries.

ETL Pipeline: We are automating the process of moving data from our construction management software to our data warehouse faster and more efficiently via Workato, ensuring accurate data transfer every time. This will also eventually help us extract these data for visualization to analyze trends and detect issues.

API Management: Because of the robust options available for API management within the software itself, we are exploring feasibility of building and maintaining scalable, secure, and efficient APIs endpoints within Workato.

According to Kwan Yee, there is plenty to improve and there are many more use cases to experiment and explore: “We are definitely exploring new avenues to use the software. Perhaps integrating our planning and also our finance software as we see a lot of potential, even in processes that currently we are not able to automate because of certain limitations.”
