Peeking into the Future at World’s Largest GIS Conference

Gamuda at Esri User Conference 2024

The Esri 2024 User Conference, held annually in San Diego, is a premier gathering for GIS professionals and enthusiasts from around the world. This event brings together users of Esri’s industry-leading GIS software to explore the latest advancements, share innovative solutions, and discuss the future of geographic information systems.

In the spirit of exploration and the constant quest for knowledge to fuel our innovation, this year our GIS Manager, Wan Hamizi Bin Wan Taha, attended the event and shared his insights and experiences from the conference.

Esri 2024 User Conference provided valuable insights into the latest trends and technologies in the GIS field. The conference featured a series of plenary sessions, technical workshops, and exhibitions showcasing the newest Esri technologies and applications. Keynote speeches by industry leaders, including Esri’s founder Jack Dangermond, highlighted the latest developments and future directions for GIS technology.

Key Highlight: A Direct Discussion with Esri Technical Experts

During the Esri 2024 User Conference, Wan Hamizi had the opportunity to engage in a productive meeting with Esri’s technical experts, Micah Callough (AEC Technical Director at Esri) and Kathleen Kewley (Director of Global Business Development for AEC).

One of the many technical sessions at Esri User Conference 2024.

We shared with Esri Gamuda’s journey with GIS, highlighting significant projects like the KVMRT and the Penang Transport Master Plan, and discussed how Gamuda integrates GIS with other systems, such as BIM, to enhance project delivery and management.

The Esri technical team provided valuable insights into advanced GIS tools and applications that Gamuda could leverage, such as GeoAI for automating spatial analyses and GeoBIM for seamless integration of GIS and BIM. We discussed on ways to enhance the current relationship between Esri and Gamuda as well as suggested organizing technical workshops and training sessions.

Key Highlights from the Esri 2024 User Conference

An exciting development that piqued our interest at the conference was the collaboration between Esri and Autodesk in the creation of GeoBIM. This innovative technology integrates Building Information Modeling (BIM) with GIS and allows for real-time updates and comprehensive project management. This ensures that all stakeholders have access to the latest information and can make informed decisions, especially with its integration with our current CDE, Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC).

“I can see also that GeoAI is changing the construction industry by extracting information from imagery to feed digital twins, enabling improved project/risk management, design optimization, and more”

Additionally, the conference revealed several exciting trends in GIS technologies, namely:

  1. Advanced Visualisation: The merger of GIS with Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) technologies offers new possibilities for immersive project visualization and remote site inspections.
  2. Enhanced Collaboration: New tools are emerging to improve data sharing and collaboration across different teams and stakeholders in our projects.
  3. Geospatial Digital Twins: The implementation of geospatial digital twins is emerging as a powerful tool to inform strategic infrastructure and engineering decisions, providing our company with enhanced capabilities for planning and analysis.
  4. Climate Change Preparedness: There is now a more robust and serious answer to climate change using GIS technologies assisted by The Climate Checklist framework introduced by Esri for governments and business leaders.

Finger on the Pulse: Shaping the future of Gamuda’s GIS

The insights and innovations shared were inspiring, and I look forward to applying what I’ve learned and continuing these valuable connections.

As we at Gamuda continue to push the boundaries of digital construction, the insights gained from the Esri User Conference 2024 will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping our future GIS strategies and implementations. We’re excited to explore these new technologies and continue delivering innovative solutions in our projects, reinforcing our position as a thought leader in digital construction.

As we continue to embrace these cutting-edge technologies in our engineering practices, the company is well-positioned to remain at the forefront of GIS innovation we are poised to harness the full potential of GIS, driving forward its mission of delivering world-class infrastructure projects with precision and efficiency.
