Gamuda’s IBS Portal: Unlocking Data-Powered Insights for Construction Success

Digital Transformation from Factory to Operations

In contrast to traditional construction, where everything is built piece by piece on-site, Gamuda IBS uses a digital factory to produce key parts of a building, like walls, floors, and columns. These parts are then transported to the construction site and put together quickly and precisely.

While the cutting-edge Digital IBS Factory has streamlined the production of prefabricated components through automation and advanced robotics, Gamuda encountered some challenges in its operations, including disconnected data sources and manual processes.

In response to this, through grassroots innovation, we have managed to digitise much of the IBS-related operations through the GIBS (Gamuda IBS) portal. This advanced data platform serves as a centralized command center, enhancing transparency, governance, and data-driven decision-making across Gamuda Building Unit (GBU) and Gamuda IBS operations.

Inside the Dashboard

Lim Jia Jun is an alumnus of Gamuda’s Data Hero program.

Spearheaded by and now leading a dedicated team, Jia Jun focused on developing GIBS, an advanced data portal that enhances transparency and governance across Gamuda Building Unit (GBU) and Gamuda IBS operations. This effort involved managing and analyzing structured data to support strategic decision-making and insightful business planning.

The Gamuda IBS (GIBS) portal, is built using advanced tools such as Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC) and integrated with tools like BigQuery and Power BI. Using BigQuery’s capability to handle large datasets with fast query performance and Power BI’s advanced data visualization and real-time update features, enable the creation of dynamic, insightful, and responsive dashboards.

Key Features of the GIBS Portal

This centralized platform consolidates data from multiple sources, including robotics, finance software, and ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems, into a single, user-friendly interface. The dashboard tracks man-hours, site reports, and other critical metrics, providing a holistic view of project progress. This consolidation ensures consistent monitoring and enables teams to proactively solve problems, keeping projects on track and within budget.

The GIBS portal offers several essential features designed to address common project management challenges:

Real-Time Monitoring: Provides real-time updates on project progress, resource allocation, and production status, ensuring that all teams involved have current information for making timely decisions.

Informed Decision-Making: Visualizes key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics, helping project managers up-to-date oversight of the project and improve project efficiency.

Proactive Issue Resolution: Streamlines identification of issues and potentially addresses them before they escalate, maintaining project timelines and minimizing disruptions on the ground.

Comprehensive Reporting: Generates detailed reports and analytics, providing insights into material usage patterns, distribution, and stock, helping identify inefficiencies that can be resolved. These reports are crucial for optimizing resource allocation and achieving cost savings.

The GIBS portal also facilitates effective communication and collaboration among team members by providing access to the latest project information and updates. This ensures that all stakeholders are aligned and can make informed decisions based on accurate and up-to-date data.

Supporting various stages of construction projects, from tender and design coordination to construction and completion, the portal streamlines processes, improves productivity, and ensures quality control across all phases. We also have managed to increase productivity by an estimated 30%.

Continuous Improvement Through Feedback

The plans for the GIBS Portal include several key enhancements aimed at improving project management and integration. Firstly, the portal has the potential to incorporate project-specific Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) data collection and monitoring to ensure sustainability metrics are tracked effectively. Additionally, there is a plan for site plan integration for monitoring high-risk activities and enhancing safety management on construction sites.

Furthermore, the portal might feature enhanced systems for tracking defect reports and internal analyses, improving coordination and design processes. Advanced cost estimation tools utilizing machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) could provide highly accurate cost predictions, aiding in precise financial planning and resource allocation. These enhancements aim to make the GIBS Portal a comprehensive, unified platform for efficient and sustainable construction project management.
