The Variable Density Tunnel Boring Machine (VD TBM)

A novel solution for tunnelling in difficult ground conditions
  • A novel extension to the multi-mode tunnel boring machines with four different tunnelling modes, a first in mechanised tunnelling. The technology was specially designed by MMC Gamuda in collaboration with Herrenknecht AG to build the twin tunnels for the Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line. The project was situated in mixed ground conditions with sections of extreme karstic limestone known to be some of the most difficult geologies for TBMs to operate in.
  • With its debut success in the KVMRT Lines, the VD TBM was subsequently adopted across the world for its versatility in heterogeneous ground conditions
  • Winner of the 2014 “Technical Innovation of the Year” award jointly organised by New Civil Engineer and International Tunneling and Underground Space Association
